Causes of Allais common consequence paradoxes: an experimental dissection

چکیده

OO F Abstract The common consequence paradox of Allais can be decomposed into three simpler principles: transitivity, coalescing, and restricted branch independence. Different theories attribute such paradoxes to violations of restricted branch independence only, to coalescing only, or to both. This study separates tests of these two properties in order to compare these theories. Although rankdependent utility (RDU) theories, including cumulative prospect theory (CPT), violate branch independence, the empirical pattern of violations is opposite that required by RDU theories to account for Allais paradoxes. Data also show systematic violations of coalescing, which refute RDU theories. The findings contradict both original and CPTs with or without their editing principles of combination and cancellation. Modal choices were well predicted by Birnbaum’s RAM and TAX models with parameters estimated from previous data. The effects of event framing on these tests were also assessed and found to be negligible. r 2004 Published by Elsevier Inc.

Allais Paradoxes Can be Reversed by Presenting Choices in Canonical Split Form

This paper tests Birnbaum’s (2004) theory that the constant consequence paradoxes of Allais are due to violations of coalescing, the assumption that when two branches lead to the same consequence, they can be combined by adding their probabilities. Rank dependent utility and cumulative prospect theory imply that the Allais paradoxes are due to violations of restricted branch independence, a wea...

Risk, Delay, and Convex Self-Control Costs

The dual-self model supposes that decision-making involves a conflict between the desire for immediate and safe gratification on the one hand, and riskier long term benefits on the other. This conflict is resolved through a decision criterion that puts weights on both desires. A key element of the model is that this weighting is endogenous, and that changes in constraints that have the same eff...

New paradoxes of risky decision making.

During the last 25 years, prospect theory and its successor, cumulative prospect theory, replaced expected utility as the dominant descriptive theories of risky decision making. Although these models account for the original Allais paradoxes, 11 new paradoxes show where prospect theories lead to self-contradiction or systematic false predictions. The new findings are consistent with and, in sev...

The effects of losses and event splitting on the Allais paradox

The Allais Paradox, or common consequence effect, has been a standard challenge to normative theories of risky choice since its proposal over 60 years ago. However, neither its causes nor the conditions necessary to create the effect are well understood. Two experiments test the effects of losses and event splitting on the Allais Paradox. Experiment 1 found that the Allais Paradox occurs for bo...
